Farm Equipment

These days, nearly every grocery store offers a varied and ample stock of fresh produce. The mundane—such as apples, oranges and bananas—and the exotic—such as prickly pears, persimmons and pomegranates—are waiting to be plucked from a shelf and taken home.

Consumers reap the benefits of plentiful harvests largely because of the work performed by agricultural equipment, such as tractors, hay balers and rotary tillers. Without these machines, agricultural farming would have to be done by hand on a much smaller scale.

The industry subdivides agricultural machinery according to the function of the equipment itself. For example, tractors fall under the traction category. Things like seed drills and potato planters fall under the planting category. Systems for watering plants are categorized under the irrigation division. Machinery such as cotton pickers, forage harvesters and hullers are considered harvesting equipment.

All plants need to be nourished and protected from pests. Manure spreaders, sprayers and fertilizing equipment fall under the fertilizing and pest control category.

One of the most important divisions of agricultural equipment pertains to soil cultivation. Soil must be properly maintained in order to distribute nutrients and afford plants an appropriate environment in which to flourish. Machines like ploughs and rototillers fall under this soil cultivation category.

Rotary tillers are one of the most widely used pieces of agricultural equipment. In fact, many homeowners own or rent one to work garden soil. Simply, a rotary tiller works the soil by means of rotating blades. The rotary tiller helps reduce cutting time when compared to tilling by hand. However, using a rotary tiller presents just as much of a workout since sub-surface objects, such as tree roots and buried garbage, can cause a rotary tiller to abruptly and violently move in any direction.

Today, it is easier than ever to locate and purchase quality agricultural equipment. For example, the Equipment Locator Service, or ELS, is a Web site on which one can find all types of farm equipment, both new and used. ELS greatly facilitates locating equipment since one simply has to choose his or her currency, country, state, equipment type, make, model, hour range, horse power range and price range with the option to exclude items posted without photos or price.

Farmers, on both a large and small scale, owe a great deal to the conveniences afforded by agricultural equipment, such as rotary tillers, tractors and hay balers.
