Any vehicle is referred to as articulated if it has a permanent joint allowing for sharper turning. The word articulated comes from the Latin word articulus, which means joint. While it is often a word associated with oratory communication, it also refers to any vehicle that can tow trailers or additional cargo on a separate chassis. A common example is freight trains; the main train engines pull many boxcars that sit on their own carriers but all share a connecting truck with the cars behind and in front of them. The concept carries over to other forms of transportation, and articulated tractors are just one example.

Articulated tractors often have a plow in front that moves independently of the cab, which allows for a tighter turning radius. This is useful in field configurations where the rows are narrower, such as a vineyard. Other heavy duty articulated tractors, such as those in the John Deere 8430 series, do not display a plow but simply have the engine separated from the cab. The articulated tractors in John Deere's 8430 series range from 180 to 275 horsepower, and according to the John Deere website, these articulated tractors set new records for fuel economy during testing at the Nebraska Tractor Test Lab. With its PowerTech Plus engine, John Deere 8430 articulated tractors are more fuel efficient than their predecessors in the 8520 series, so users will not have to pay the price for the accuracy of an articulating tractor.

New Holland is another tractor manufacturer that produces articulated tractors. New Holland's compact excavators have their digging claw as an articulated component, separate from the cab, allowing for a 180-degree range when digging and dumping materials. This means an operator will not have to go in and dig at a certain angle to get the job done, and certain areas that would normally require the use of hand tools are easy to get to.

In addition to its adaptability, the heavy duty compact excavators from New Holland get the job done in quieter and more efficient manners thanks to a number of little features that make a world of difference. The rubber tread on the track reduces the articulated tractor's noise on the work site, while the design of the dozer blade allows workers to grades and backfill easier by rolling materials on to the blade. New Holland also makes articulated tractors in the form of mid-size excavators for companies who need the extra power.

Companies such as Power Trac know the advantages of articulated machinery and specialize in selling articulated tractors. Unlike the websites of commercial use manufacturers John Deere or New Holland, Power Trac sells articulated tractors for farmers, and as a result they are up front with prices. All homeowner models in Power Trac's H class, such as the PT-180, are articulated tractors. With its 4'2'' lift height, the PT-180 can lift 600 pounds and move along the fields powered by an 18 horsepower gasoline engine. The more advanced PT-422, in comparison, comes with a 22 horsepower engine and can lift 200 more pounds than the PT-180. The former costs $5,500 while the latter runs for $2,000 more. Both, however, benefit from articulated steering allowing for sharper turns.

Articulated tractors are available from a number of both personal and commercial use dealers such as Power Trac and John Deere, respectively. Their durability and versatility make them a popular choice for farmers and construction companies alike.
